European Perspectives in the Information Society Project (EPIS)

"European Perspectives in the Information Society" (EPIS) is a multi-annual foresight initiative aiming at deepening the understanding over potential market developments and trends, over the potential evolution of technologies and of business models.

EPIS shall provide a prospective view towards the potential evolution of technologies and applications in relation to IST. It shall also look into any potential disruptions expected in the coming decade. Its aim is to highlight really “hot” issues, to recognize fast emerging, important technological and business topics in order to draw the attention of policy makers on unexpected trends and major changes, which may happen in the coming years. The scope of the project in its first year is on creative content.

To achieve this overall aims, EPIS has the following three main objectives :

  • The development of observatory of trends in technology and business evolutions of ICT
  • Running foresight exercises on selected thematic areas in ICT
  • Exploring specific implications for policies in particular R&D policy in ICT

The study will build upon the work already carried out by the IPTS in Foresight on Information Society Technologies in the European Research Area (FISTERA).

Efforts towards developing cross-national visions of the future of technologies on a per- sector basis have so far been largely absent from the European Research Area (ERA) in general, and consequently form the European area for foresight in particular. The aim of the FISTERA (Foresight on Information Society Technologies in the European Research Area) thematic network is therefore to bring together actors and insights in and from national foresight exercises on ISTs in a systematic way that ensures continuity over time. To achieve this overall aim, FISTERA has the following three main objectives :

To compare results of national foresight exercises and to exchange visions for the future.

To provide a new forum for consensus building on future visions for IST.

To contribute to constructing the European Research Area through benchmarking and community building, by providing a dynamic pan European platform on foresight.
